feeling pretty good
Dec. 17th, 2005 03:42 pmabout gacking the Writing Meme from
brooklinegirl.
I got myself a lj account at the end of March, since when I have written 16 fics, though 2 of them I never actually got around to posting anywhere (oops).
due South
The Fine Art of Cartography, Double Take, Enlightenment, The First Time, For I Have Sinned, Hot and Bothered, Indulgence, Ray’s Secret, Untouchable, Watch and Learn
Never posted: Alleycat, It Takes Two
Highlander
Morchuis - posted on a message board and I can't be bothered finding a link for it now
Stargate: Atlantis
Forty-Fathom Dreams, Untitled Ronon/Sheppard thing, untitled girlJohn PWP
And here's the meme.
My favorite story of this year: Enlightenment, because Ray woke me up in the middle of the night demanding that I wrote it down.
My best story this year: The Fine Art of Cartography. For once I managed exactly what I had in my head
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Morchuis. It was appreciated, but not quite how I wanted it to be received, if that makes any sense
Most fun story: Enlightenment. Ray makes me laugh.
Most sexy story: girlJohn PWP. Seems I may have a kink...
Story with the single sexiest moment: Ray’s Secret. Specifically:
Because Fraser’s not just holding them now, he’s stroking them, strong fingers moving slowly right over the crotch of Ray’s second-favourite pair of panties and it feels like every blood cell in his body shoots straight into his dick at the sight, turning him on so fast he damn near gets whiplash.
“How do they make you feel?”
Fraser’s voice has gone all soft and velvety and Ray just has to look at him. Fraser doesn’t look horrified, or disgusted, or even like he’s freaking out. He looks focused. Fascinated. And when their eyes meet, Fraser’s are dark and hot and Ray has to swallow hard to keep from whimpering.
“How do they make you feel, Ray?”
“Pretty,” he blurts
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: It Takes Two.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: For I Have Sinned. An angsty Bob Fraser appeared from somewhere.
Hardest story to write: Watch and Learn
Biggest Disappointment: Hot and Bothered. Didn't do what I wanted it to for the majority. I'm only really happy with the porn at the end.
Biggest Surprise: Forty-Fathom Dreams. Because I wasn't planning on writing SGA at all, and if I had, I would have expected something a lot less creepy. *shivers*
Most Unintentionally Telling Story: don't really know - I suck at self-analysis. If anyone wants to volunteer an option, go right ahead!

Date: 2005-12-17 04:53 pm (UTC)*cough* Oy, you, that was my birthday present... I thought it was great *g*
I'm curious about the two dS fics you haven't posted... have I read them?
Also, d'you know what would make girlJohn even sexier? Writing more! :P

Date: 2005-12-17 05:57 pm (UTC)Nope you haven't read them, they have never left my computer.

:-P right back atcha. I've stuck on the fact that I have no idea what a therapist like Heightmeyer would tell someone who just got involuntarily gender-switched. Ooh, cunning plan - I could just have him avoid seeing her until I've worked something out...

Date: 2005-12-17 09:06 pm (UTC)It's only a drabble though, don't get too excited. Save that for when I get around to typing in a D/M totally irredeemable PWP I wrote before I even had a computer.
Um, on second thoughts, better not get excited about that either, it probably isn't very good at all...
I've kind of fallen out of the HL fandom - last time I looked at Seventh Dimension it hadn't been updated for months and I gave up on the mailing list I was on about 2 years back, though I check in with some people's web pages occasionally to see if they've updated. When I read stuff now, it is usually something I found ages ago and really liked - today I went and read through some of the Futures Without End stuff and that was great because I'd forgotten about a lot of those stories.
Scuttlebut on the new movie (Peter Wingfield's diary or something) says they are all excited to be doing it again. But apparently they were excited about Endgame too. I'm reserving judgement until I see some footage - and to be honest, it probably won't get a cinema release in the UK anyway, Endgame didn't.

Date: 2005-12-17 09:40 pm (UTC)Endgame never got a theatrical release in the UK? Wow. It got like a 2 week release here and no one went, but at least that meant we could see the better ending (imo) rather than the changed one for the DVD release.

Date: 2005-12-17 10:29 pm (UTC)I never got to see the series properly, it was all fairly random order and very bitty - I think I mentioned the merry-go-round of the episodes on TV here before, so I probably wasn't the typical fan either. In fact, the first D/M fics I read, I didn't even know who Methos was! I never really read much discussion/meta, I was pretty much all about the slash (which I hadn't known existed before) - once I'd worked out who the hell this Methos character was anyway!
The closed canon thing is interesting. It does mean that all the information is there and that there is no possibility of getting Jossed (I don't know the equivalent HL term for that). I hadn't really thought of it before, but dS is obviously closed too, in fact unlike HL it was closed before I got into the fandom at all. I supposed it is a testament to the strength of people's liking for dS that the fandom is still so very active, while the HL fandom seems to be decaying - well, from my perspective which is biased. Maybe the new film will pick it up again.

Date: 2005-12-18 03:48 am (UTC)D/M was my first personal interaction with slash in a fandom I cared about - in whatever ep of the series there is where they're working on Anne's house and Duncan paints Methos's nose, I remember the great flowering of discussion and fic that happened after that, it was epic. It was certainly the first time I agreed that there was unquestionable UST b/w guys on a show.
I think everyone's calling it Jossing everywhere now, it's become such a well-known term. :) I haven't done a lot of writing in any fandom, but for me the nice thing about a closed canon is that you know mostly that you're going to be pleased with the work in total. I tend to be a completist so if I start watching something and like it, I tend to keep watching it unless it really starts to bite, and I hate it when that happens (hi, Alias!). Of course the nice thing about an open canon is that you can look forward to new stuff every week or whenever.
I was thrilled to see that there was an active dS community still, and it was the main reason why I finally got LJ-fied - I recall being vaguely horrified by the drama of the Ray Wars on mailing lists and never got into dS fandom before because of it. (That and that whole graduating and trying to get a job thing. *g*)

Yeah, that is nice! And it is so rotten when something you like starts going off the rails - I started off watching Angel but it kind of lost me in the 2nd series and I just couldn't work up any interest in the 3rd at all and I was so disappointed because I wanted to really enjoy it.

Date: 2005-12-18 07:04 pm (UTC)Exactly. Faith did get screwed over, but it's hard to feel sympathy for her when she was so wishy-washy and amoral herself. Honestly, I could never get past the whole thing that the writers ignored HL canon, which was that Duncan never got married, just to have the weird Kate/Faith storyline which didn't require a marriage to work anyway. (Plus, she was the chick who slept with Hugh Grant in Bridget Jones. Heh.) At least if Kell killed her, her character's arc makes sense, whereas the revised ending, where she's all "I am superbitter and everything about living forever sucks, yet I don't want to die either"...
Thanks for the fic link too; interesting premise, I like the Faith there (there was always something weird Faith/Kell-wise, imo).
Ah, poor Angel. It had interesting moments, but it never hung together very well for me. It's always hard to make a spinoff show as engaging as the original, especially as writers and actors shift around. Have you seen Firefly/Serenity?

Date: 2005-12-18 10:00 pm (UTC)I absolutely adore Firefly/Serenity - I saw Serenity first and it blew me away and then I just had to buy Firefly because I wanted to know more about all of these people. I actually just finished rewatching Objects in Space about 5 minutes ago! I can't wait for Serenity to come out on DVD either. (The Firefly theme song sucks big rocks though - what was he thinking?)
