Torchwood,Torchwood... the jury's out
Nov. 5th, 2006 05:45 pmAround three weeks ago I saw the Torchwood advert on the side of a bus. Captain Jack, heroic pose, dark and moody, infinitely sexy. I got thoroughly excited about the series - I mean, I was already, but the poster and imminent arrival made me extremely bouncy.
Being away when the first two episodes aired (and not possessing digital), the first one I saw was the third called Ghost Machine (I think). And I admit it - I was disappointed. The idea was good and the sections where the team saw the past were effectively done, particularly the murder of the girl (though I have suspicions that may have been slightly cut on terrestrial). Very creepy and disturbing and I thought the reaction of the actor who plays Owen was really good there. But the rest of the acting, and in fact a lot of the rest of the episode in general felt a little... stilted. The timing seemed a little off, the team didn't interact particularly naturally, and the scene where Jack teaches Gwen to shoot made me actually cringe in embarrassment, it felt so clumsy and cliched. And on the subject of Gwen, what kind of idiot picks up an alien device and immediately presses the button to see what happens? For all anyone knew at that point, it could have been the remote control for a Death Star poised to turn the Earth into its component atoms. *grumbles*
Still, it was pretty cool overall, and you know, Jack... so I downloaded the first episode this weekend, Everything Changes. And loved every minute. People swore, they had jokes, Jack insulted the Welsh... it was really good. (Though I hope someone ripped Owen a new one for basically date raping that unfortunate couple. Blech. Little shit.)
So I am now confused, but relieved as I really do want to like the series. Here's hoping the other episodes work as well as number one.
Don't disappoint me again, Torchwood. It makes the baby Doctor cry...

Date: 2006-11-05 06:27 pm (UTC)I'm still working on the big fannish project, which now is big (ask Tora).
And Torchwood! eee! (I'm not seeing tonight's episode because the parents prefer Touch of Frost *sigh*)

Date: 2006-11-05 06:42 pm (UTC)Nah, still here. Though I was in Malaysia for ten days recently, hence the quietness and missing the first Torchwood epis. Yes, I had a very nice time in Malaysia, before you ask :-D
And I see from your page that the fannish monster is getting seriously big, go you! Mine is plugging along - I'd like to get it finished in a year, which means I have until January to pull my finger out and write the last three sections... eh, maybe I'll make it! (I did retain enough sense not to sign up for NaNoWriMo, given how slowly I write big things that would just never work)

Date: 2006-11-05 07:10 pm (UTC)Did you have a good holiday? You being away gave me a good excuse not to do anything useful, I kept thinking "oh, well, no point finishing that fic cos Janne's not around to beta"... yeah, procrastination is my friend.
I'm trying to get 50 000 words of fic finished for NaNo (I've decided I don't have to have written all those words this month, I just have to finish the fics)
Have you seen ep 2 of Torchwood yet? I think that's been my favourite so far, even if only because it's mainly porn.

Date: 2006-11-05 07:56 pm (UTC)foolishbrave. And seriously, send me stuff whenever you get it done and I'll shoot it full of little balloon boxes and send it back.I've currently only seen 1 and 3 since 1 took forever to dl - but the mention of porn is tempting me severely to go get 2 as well.
The holiday was really, really good. We went to an island for 3 nights and it was like something out of a film - white sand, clear blue water, cabin right on the beach... we went snorkeling one day and saw so many cool colourful fish and coral formations, plus a shark (okay, a small shark but it was only 3m away and was very cool) and a humungous turtle. Oh, saw The Prestige too. Interesting film (and disturbing).

Date: 2006-11-05 08:43 pm (UTC)Sadly the porn in episode 2 is not boy-porn... but I'm hoping that'll come. Although the JB interview in The Metro said he wouldn't be getting naked this season. Darn it.
Heh, girlJohn is one of the ones I'm working on... It's one of maybe five(?) WIPs I have that are very, very nearly finished, but stalled at the porn. Gah. Oh, and I've dug out Under the Influence - it's getting an extreme makeover.
