Merlin: A Remedy to Cure All Ills

1. Edwin is creepy. Creepy, creepy, creepy and a clever manipulative bugger. He knew just how to play Uther all the way through.
2. Augh, bugs! Bugs that crawl inside you! I've had a total thing about that since seeing ST: The Wrath of Khan (I think it was that one) at a young age. Augh! *shudders*
3. Ooh, and Merlin and Arthur hanging out in Arthur's room at night is now TOTALLY CANON! Ha! (Which is nice since this was virtually the only interaction they had). I loved Merlin pretending he isn't worried until Arthur has to pace too.
4. This episode was basically about Gaius and his past. Very cool - he clearly has issues with what Uther did back then and it is intriguing to speculate about why he escaped the purge. Just because he did good magic and those who were burned did black magic? Or did he make some kind of deal with Uther?
5. It is really interesting as well that Gaius has spoken with the Dragon before. And the Dragon is rather harsh to him, with good reason it appears. Poor Gaius does not have a good time at all this week.
6. Interesting dilemma for Gaius as well - save the King and friend he's served for 25 years, or keep the boy he sees as a son safe. I think he chose the only way he could in trying to take out Edwin himself.
7. The Uther/Gaius dynamic is getting even more intriguing. They really are like a darker Merlin/Arthur. All that about Gaius never betraying Uther in his quest to eradicte magic - and Gaius hiding Merlin all this time. We got another hint about Arthur being born being an important moment for them as well: Gaius has been at Camelot since Arthur's birth and "all that entailed".
8. I liked that Merlin didn't pounce on Edwin's offer to teach him like an eager puppy. He was obviously interested but just as obviously holding back. And he was so desperate for Gaius to stay; he clearly knew who would be a better teacher for him even not knowing for sure Edwin was a bad 'un.
9. The bit with the axe was cool, but I assume we were meant to think that time had slowed rather than Edwin was really that slow at attacking Merlin? Very nice that Merlin could stop the spell of a trained experienced sorcerer without even speaking, mind. As an aside to that, this is the second person Merlin has killed. I'd like to see some reaction to that - if not in the show (and I think they are unlikely to in primetime family drama) at least in a fic.
That's about it. A good episode, but it didn't make me giddy. They can't always, I suppose!
