bouncy bouncy Battlestar Galactica
May. 12th, 2005 08:57 pmSo I just got finished watching the two and a half hour long pilot for the new BSG series after a very kind person lent me the DVD. I was prepared to watch it simply because of the presence of CKR, but I actually ended up liking it quite a bit.
I suppose I was never really that wedded to the original series - I watched it obsessively when I was about 10 but I have to admit that it was cheesy and not exactly high class drama. I think my fondness for it comes mainly from some very good fic that I have read in recent years more than the actual episodes. So I was never going to sit there protesting all the things the new one changed, though I was rather wary about the change in genders of some of the characters whose names had been kept.
Things I loved:
- CKR, CKR, CKR, how do I love thee? With a big heart-thumping passion. Intense then charming then creepy... *shivers* And the lifting the Commander off the ground was too cool.
Things I liked:
- the new look Cylons and the whole concept of them mimicking humans and going undercover, very creepy and interesting, and I was not expecting the reveal at the end when it turned out the PR guy actually was one, and especially that Boomer was (that was Boomer, right? the names got confusing)
- the way the destruction was filmed was actually rather horrifying, unlike the original series, and the horrible hard decisions of having to leave people and sacrifice lives to save others was more complexity than I was expecting
- the pilot who sacrificed himself for Baltar was really moving
- Baltar is very interesting, much more complex than the simple traitor of the orginal and I haven't quite decided yet whether blondie cylon is in his imagination or not
- I liked Commander Adama
- the way faster computers wound up killing people was a neat idea
- the dog fights, very nice
- the one God of the Cylons vs. the 12 Lords of Kobol thing could get interesting
Things I didn't like:
- making Apollo, Starbuck etc. their call signs. It got really confusing when they would switch between real names and call signs and I kept forgetting which name went with which sign (hence the Boomer confusion above)
- the President's wimpy secretary. yawn, boooring.
- Apollo and Starbuck. Maybe they'll grow on me, but I spent about the first half thinking Apollo was a wanker and wondering why Starbuck was apparently hopped up on cocaine, which made her kind of annoying. I liked Apollo slightly better by the end but I'm still not sure about Starbuck
Anyway, that's it for now.

Date: 2005-05-13 02:13 am (UTC)You'll love CKR's ep in the series, "Flesh and Blood", then. Lots of charming intense creepiness. :)
My SO watched the original series when it was on, but I didn't (the DVDs make it seem *really cheesy* to me!). For my part when watching the first season, I got really sick of Baltar really fast. The whole god thing, as well as the undercover cylons, will continue to be a big issue. I liked the way that they approached the destruction of the civilization as well; they're really going for a darker and more desperate feel.

Date: 2005-05-16 06:54 pm (UTC)I have just watched the first episode proper. Still favourably impressed and feeling slightly sympathetic to Baltar. Also still slightly irritated by Starbuck, less than before but that could be because she wasn't in it much. I still think she was on something in the pilot and a Dr friend of mine thinks she has allergic rhinitis because of all the twitches and sniffs (and she has seen all the series)!
Only 6 episodes to go before the return of CKR, woohoo!
