I have now watched the prepenultimate and penultimate episode of Highlander series one and... yeah. Not really running up to the finale with a bang! They're probably the ones I've enjoyed least so far.
Der Racheengel
Avenging Angel is the name and this was the only episode I've seen so far that I was seriously tempted to just skip once I'd got 10 minutes in. Martin Kemp was dire as the insane new immortal - I don't think he convinced me with a single line. Or maybe it was that the lines he had to say were so poorly written. Or both.
And the storyline with the old friend of Tessa's who turned out to be a prostitute left me cold too. I liked that there was a lack of judgement of her friend overall and that Tessa caught herself being judgmental and pulled back but it simply wasn't very interesting.
And where on earth did insane!dude get the chainmail from anyway?
About the only bits I did like were Duncan telling Tessa the insane guy had thought he was an angel and Tessa laughing, and Tessa lying on Duncan's back when he was looking things up. They looked all nice and comfortable together.
Flucht ohne Ausweg
'Nowhere to Run' in English and I think the German is maybe closer to 'no escape'. This was a cut above the last one in writing and performance, plus it benefited from having Anthony Head before he became Anthony Stewart Head and started fighting vampires. But I found the whole storyline to be pretty depressing. Probably intentionally since no story that starts with a rape is going to be a barrel of laughs but it wasn't much fun to watch.
Duncan being lethally competent was probably the best bits of it, and I did like that he didn't take the stepdad's head after he beat him. It was all very downbeat though.
I think one thing I am missing in this series is an arc. Here I am, with just one episode to go but there's no thread to pull me into it with anticipation. All the episodes have been standalones and while they have (mostly) been entertaining and enjoyable, it does lose something from not having that plot tying them together and from not having a build up to the finale.
