All right, bright intelligent people on my f-list or clever, unknown lurkers (if there are any lurkers here), I could use some assistance here.

Does anyone know what men wore as underwear in the Regency period of history, specifically the 1815-1820 era? I can find oodles of info on the women (wow, lots of stuff on the internet on women's underwear, imagine that) but everyone is keeping schtum on the men.

So. Loin cloths? Underbreeches? Long johns? Anyone who has been paying extra special attention in historical dramas, now's the time to stand up and be counted.

I need you, people. Throw me a clue.

I can't help, but I can suggest someone who might be able to, in case you don't get an answer here: [livejournal.com profile] damned_colonial, whose obsession with things historical knows no bounds. She's an Age of Sail girl, which includes the dates you mention here, and she's incredibly detail oriented. Plus, she has historically accurate costume books, I think. If you don't know her and don't feel comfortable asking her, I'd be happy to; just let me know.

Oh, of course - I know the name from dS flashfiction and I knew there was someone out there who was definitely of a historical bent, I just hadn't put them together!

I have actually got an answer now, but thanks for the reminder and the offer - turns out Mr Darcy would have worn drawers (kinky...)

Hah, my mum is very useful. I just phoned her on the offchance she might know and apparently she has a book. It says:

"regency men usually wore short or knee length cotton or linen drawers under their breeches which were tied at the waist with ribbon. Drawers had a small vent in the front and could be drawn in from behind with tape. Ankle-length drawers were worn under pantaloons or trousers and theis either had feet attached or were kept in place with a strap under the instep."

Off to beta chap 4 now... yay! *g*

Your mum is indeed very useful! What did you give as a reason for asking, incidentally? *smirk*

Anyway, that is exactly the stuff I needed to know, I can get on with Sheppard removing his trousers now that I know what is actually under them (besides the obvious, that is!)

A tease? Moi? You must be thinking of someone else...

(btw, your icon is hilarious!)

Heh, I just told her my friend was researching regency fashions (you are, kind of. Just not for any purpose my mum needs to know about!)

*bounces happily on the spot* I can't wait for more of this! *ponders how many times she can say she loves this fic without getting boring*

Icon is by [profile] tardis80... she's got a whole series like that one *g*

Oh, like I'm ever going to get tired of hearing that! Okay, sure, other people might get bored but not me, nope.
