x-men 3 ramblings
May. 27th, 2006 06:50 pmWent and saw X-Men 3 last night... and was sadly not that impressed, in fact I was a little disappointed.
Bad things:
- poor Cyclops got completely shafted. Not only did he vanish after about the first 10 minutes, but the only person who even apparently noticed was Wolverine!
- Rogue was also much with the being screwed. A boyfriend who seems to ignore her in a moment of huge upset to go and flirt with her friend and who doesn't even notice she's gone until much later the next day and she doesn't even get a look in at the action. Plus her decision is sold as being all about Bobby, which makes her look a little bit pathetic.
- the scene when Jean/Phoenix kills Xavier was totally mispaced. It could have been much more dramatic and a huge shock if they had just speeded it up instead of dragging it down for several minutes.
- Magneto's treatment of Mystique seemed very out of character considering how close they've been in the other films. He should at least have said thank you!
- they lost their moral superiority a bit by using the cure on Magneto (couldn't Hank hve just knocked him out?) And how ethical was the surprise end twist with Xavier?
- the big climax with Phoenix and Wolverine was a big hole of missing logic. It just didn't make any sense.
- oh, and the ending where suddenly everything is peachy felt a little rushed...
Good things:
- Hugh Jackman. Duh. And I have to admit that when Phoenix was dissolving bits off him, my main thought was "ooh, look at the uniform vanish! Maybe he'll end up naked!" But it was a bit unfair for Xavier to blame him for waking up Jean/Phoenix, as far as I could tell all he did was touch her.
- Ellen Page as Kitty! And the bit where she sticks Juggernaut in the floor was coooooool.
- Ian McKellen rocked (though the "what have I done" moment was a bit weird)
- the winged guy was cool, it would have been nice if he'd been in it more.
- the other mutant bad guys were fairly entertaining, and I'm sure I've seen asian spiky guy in something else, but I can't remember what, grr.
