the end of year writing meme
Jan. 7th, 2007 03:47 pmGuess it is time to
Written since the last time this came around:
Give a Little, Get a Little
Fall into a Dream
Taking Time
Making Amends
5 Things That John Did With His Mouth and What They Did to Rodney
My favorite story this year (of my own):
Taking Time. The only time this year I managed a flashfic; and it was a Doctor Who crossover for the Virgin Challenge, of all things. I wasn’t very sure about how well it worked at the time, but now I really like it.
My best story this year:
Making Amends, because I wrote it in 5 hours – and that is counting from actually getting the original idea to posting – and actually managed Team interaction and a story with structure. I was so proud.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
I think I got appreciated enough for all of those actually. People were lovely and generous with feedback and I thank you all again.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2005?
John/Rodney. Wasn’t even on my radar last year and now I write virtually nothing else. Also, John/The Doctor. No idea where that came from!
Most fun story:
Taking Time, because I got to think of fun things for the characters to do on their little vacation.
Sexiest story:
Fall into a Dream
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Hmm, can I have the whole of Fall into a Dream again? Or possibly Sheppard going onto his knees in front of Rodney in 5 Things.... Or the bit in Making Amends when Rodney pulls John in so that his face is hidden. Er. Did I mention I’m quite undecisive?
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Well, I made aliens make John jerk off to propitiate their gods, that was probably fairly wrong… Can I count the girl!John thing? I have posted a snippet, though the rest is nowhere near completion.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Give a Little, Get a Little, where I wrote shy!John without really thinking about it and then decided that it’s a perception I really like: John comfortable socially but not nearly so easy about real intimacy. See also Making Amends, where the real issue for John isn’t people looking at his body while he jerks off, but the fact they can see his face while he does it, something I didn’t even realise until ages after I wrote it.
Hardest story to write:
The 5 Things... one. I had four for ages but it took me forever to think of 5 that would tie together.
Biggest Disappointment:
Still not being able to get the Regency thing finished for the
sga_flashfic amnesty deadline (it was originally inspired by the Harlequin challenge), despite having started it around the time of the amnesty last year. I’m slow, like the bastard love child of a sloth and a tortoise slow.
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?
I suppose writing the 10th Doctor in Taking Time after only seeing around four episodes with the character was a bit of a risk since I didn’t really know him that well, and it was also the first crossover I’d ever attempted. I’m not sure I learned anything from it in particular, though it did force me to think about describing the physical details of scenes more than I usually do since it was the Doctor seen from an SGA perspective and John reacting to him and the places they visited.
Biggest Surprise:
The response to Taking Time. Really, really fantastic and it got recced a few times as well, so very flattering.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
Probably Fall into a Dream again, since several of the things in it came straight out of an actual dream I had and therefore from my subconscious.
Conclusions?
Given that last year I had 16 fics to reference in this meme, and this year I have a grand total of five, it would seem I have unfortunately had a lot less time for fandom this year. I blame all that pesky RL stuff.
