I'm slightly over half way through series 1 now and still enjoying myself. Particularly the historical flashbacks actually - despite my inappropriate glee every time Duncan has a different accent, they really are rather impressive for a TV series. The costume dept must have loved all the opportunities to do different things too not to mention getting to dress someone who looks as good in absolutely everything as Adrian Paul!
So next up we have:
Blondinen bevorzugt
Okay, I had to hit online translations for this one instead of half-remembered vocab - I got that it was about blondes from the episode, but 'bevorzugt' was beyond me. But now I know it means preferred (see, HL is entertaining and educational!) And for once I prefer that title as the English one of 'See No Evil' makes no sense for the episode at all since it has nothing to do with sight or eyes.
I liked how the flashback in this episode was in black and white because it was prohibition era - it felt nicely old movieish. Apart from that, the main points of interest are that Seacouver cops are incapable of pulling off any operation more complex than 'look at Duncan suspiciously' and Tessa is awesome for use of a car as a weapon.
Das Attentat
The assassination? Hmm, kind of appropriate but 'Eyewitness' is better. This episode had the most filler so far in my opinion, but maybe there are some people who really enjoy watching Richie fail to parallel park and then hold hands with a random female in a completely pointless and dialogueless montage...
The plot was interesting for being Tessa's story rather than Duncan's for once and the identity of the bad guy was a nice idea. And the Quickening gets points for blowing up a large light sculpture thing to amusing effect! Though I did find myself distracted from the plot by wondering why Sergeant Bennet has never taken his hat off, even in the office! I find this very sinister - what is so special about that man's head?
And I think this is an episode where I spotted a moment from a HL vid I like - Duncan pulling Tessa back towards him by the arm in full flirt mode. It's fun spotting these little moments that are familiar from a different context.
Nachright von Darius
'Band of Brothers' or 'Message from Darius'? Which title is more intriguing, more likely to make a viewer wonder what might happen? Clearly our German translators felt the latter was the most interesting...
Ohh, Darius. I had forgotten how gorgeous Werner Stocker was. I can tell I am going to be very sad at a certain point and the more so because of the real life story.
I do like how HL follows up on it's threads - after hearing Darius' story, Richie asks Duncan if a good Immortal could be changed by taking the Quickening from an evil one which makes me wonder if the DQ was in the writers' minds as early as Richie's immortality. And I liked how Duncan and Richie were off having serious talks for once instead of banter.
I still don't get why anyone would choose to fight on a big pile of sulphur, but it was interesting both for being another moment I recognised from vids and for being a time when Duncan is struggling, though I think that could have been choreographed a little more convincingly.
And now the action has moved to Paris, city of romance where the thing to do if you meet a pretty girl is compliment her father's horse (if you listen to Darius' dating advice, anyway). I like the change of scene and I like Duncan fooling about with Tessa about being kept, complete with silly voices. I really am starting to adore that man.
It seems like the order of episodes has sorted itself out now - the DVDs have started to agree with the order on the box so that will make it less irritating to watch!

Blondinen bevorzugt is actually the German title of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, so for once they weren't just being literal
And for once I did like the German title better, so that just shows what steering away from literalism can do! 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' is a great title for an episode.
you don't get stuff like that on TV these days. I almost like it for that reason alone - that the narrative is so unhurried, it takes time for scenes like that
I'm all for taking time for character beats and unhurried narrative. What got me raising my eyebrows was that bit had absolutely nothing to do with the narrative at all! It really is just a time out to watch Richie and Random Girl (who has no dialogue ever) walk about.
Have you started your rewatch yet?
