Date: 2007-07-10 08:58 pm (UTC)Hm, I agree with 1,3 and 4 from your boy list and 1,4 and 5 from your girl one. I would (shamefully) have to add Billie Piper to my girl list and DAVID HEWLETT to the boy one. Oh! And Nathan Fillion. Which leaves me with space for one more girl... *ponders*

Date: 2007-07-10 09:11 pm (UTC)I don't see why you should be ashamed to like Billie Piper - she is attractive. Though I find Freema utterly gorgeous. *shrugs*

Date: 2007-07-16 08:15 pm (UTC)Fun to comtemplate. Even those people we know we really, really want to put on our lists if only we could figure out who to take off to make space.

Date: 2007-07-17 05:10 pm (UTC)I took ages to make the list because I kept thinking of other people and then going, "but I can't lose so-and-so!"

Date: 2007-07-17 05:16 pm (UTC)Billie Piper? Um. Sort of. Mostly. Yes but with reservations.
Freema Agyeman stuns me. She makes me want to sit and stare. Looks and personality.

Date: 2007-07-17 05:26 pm (UTC)Yes. It was a close, close call. Really, of all the men I find most attractive in the world since the dawn of time, for the perefect archetype of looks and style, Peter Wingfield is IT. And I really should have said him instead of one of those others. But which? I probably said Nathan Fillion because I've been writing about him and thinking about him recently. Ditto Milo Ventimiglia, who may not have staying power on my list, but damn, he's gorgeous. It seemed only fair to include a newcomer on the list. (And yes, in a way that sort of reminds me of Peter Wingfield.)
I spotted him in one of your icons btw, are you into Highlander
Oh, yes, big time. I fell in love with the show by the first episode. First season is my favourite, probably, in terms of overall stories and characters. But then Methos came along and I was done for. What a great, great character. Right up there with Lymond and Aral Vorkosigan and Aragorn.
Funny thing, though. I've never been able to write Methos fic. He defeats me. I've started many a Methos story, and never managed to finish one. I don't know why. Just one of those things. Maybe I love him too much - after all, I've never written Lymond or Aral, either. Maybe I can't get the right clarity of perpective.
But, bottom line: yes, Highlander fan. Big Highlander.

Date: 2007-07-17 06:50 pm (UTC)I fell in love with the first HL film when I was about, ooh, 14? Then I watched the series intermittently but obsessively - which sounds like an oxymoron, but was an unfortunate side-effect of the tendency of the british tv company that had it to show it at 3am, randomly stop showing it without warning so you had to keep checking the early morning schedules for months to see if it had started again, and skip between series for no apparent reason. Though one year I had satellite tv in a shared house and managed to see a whole season consecutively - the one where Tessa died I think, and I'm pretty sure I saw most of the Watchers/Hunters arc as well. But basically I only got a coherent sense of the series' canon when I found fanfiction - and HL was my very first fandom, though not really as an active participant and I have to say I don't even make it to the message boards I liked anymore. (I do still read my favourite fics occasionally, but that's about it.)
But I have seen several of the Methos eps, though not for a long time and I tend to get confused about what I've actually seen and what I've just read an awful lot about! He is the most fabulous character though, and Peter Wingfield is staggeringly gorgeous as him. I keep meaning to buy up the seasons off ebay or something and watch them properly, and then I'll get distracted by a new fandom and not get around to it.
Who is Lymond? If he's up there with Aral, Methos and Aragorn, he must be fairly interesting.

Date: 2007-07-17 06:58 pm (UTC)And I can't believe I forgot Johnny Depp! (Not that I can think of anyone I could bear to swap for him, mind.)

Date: 2007-07-17 07:04 pm (UTC)That's okay, you can't go wrong with either. Who is the gent in your current icon?
It's a while now since I've even watched Highlander - that was my fandom before X-Files, I guess. Though it (and Methos in particular) have never left my heart, and X-Files left me feeling like an abused and abandoned spouse. I didn't know Highlander aired so badly in the States - I guess I should count myself lucky that we saw it on a consistent basis here. Not surprising, when so much of it was filmed in Vancouver and it was treated on TV here as a regular American show.
Anyway, I saw it in order, back when it first aired in Canada - no, wait a minute, it wasn't airing in Canada, that was when I first got cablevision so I could see it on the Chicago superstation! Ah, what fandom drives us to! I guess they showed first season, then stopped, then brought it back. Something like that.
In any case, I loved the show, especially the flashbacks, and the sense of drama, the immortal hero. (Never liked the movies.) And Methos - ! Well. Let me not gush too much. My favourite episode of all is "Chivalry", followed by the "Horsemen" episodes. Some of the Methos episodes aren't so impressive - there are some where his role is minor and insignificant - what a waste.
The problem with Methos is that once he was introduced, I was unhappy with all the espisodes that didn't feature him, and feature him well. They were comparatively disappointing. By the end, I wanted a TV show called "Methos the Immortal" or some such thing.
I really never did participate in HL fandom much, mostly because I didn't write in it. That makes a big difference, for me. I haven't even read much Methos fic. I suppose I should go searching out recommendations.
Lymond is the hero of Dorothy Dunnett's series of novels that starts with The Game of Kings. He's a sixteenth century adventurer, and if I had to pick a favourite hero of all time, it would be him. (But Aral, Methos and Aragorn still come close.)

Date: 2007-07-17 07:11 pm (UTC)Yes; I think he's gorgeous. He's the one character in SGA whose identity and name I remember on a consistent basis!
I too love Johnny Depp, but, dammit, don't see where to fit him in. Maybe if I doubled the numbers on my list....

Oh, I like that analogy. But in my case, I was the one who abandoned the X-Files, so I guess that makes me one of those cruel deserters. It started to seem , hmm. Like it was desperately overcomplicating itself to disguise a lack of direction - or that's what I decided later, at the time I just got fed up and stopped watching.

I'm sure it aired fine in the States, but I was watching in the UK. And if you didn't have cable or satellite (which I didn't and still don't) genre programming was hard to find at all, and most terrestrial channels (with the exception of the BBC) didn't treat it very well. It's got better now that things like Lost are more mainstream; HL was probably airing about 10 years ago. And I'm very excited about Heroes finally coming to the BBC this week - at last I get to see what the fuss is about.
I wasn't a big fan of the movies (most of them are dire and the latest, The Source, is apparently worse), but I still have a soft spot for the first one. And I think Christopher Lambert rocks as Connor, I always wanted him in the series more.
You know, I don't think I've seen the Horsemen episodes. I've seen many clips, but never the full things. It's a shame they didn't do a spin off with Methos instead of Amanda.
I read a huge amount in HL over my first few years of fanfic consumption, before sliding over to dS. If you hit my 'hl' tag, I did a pile of posts about it in general plus a recs set here (http://janne-d.livejournal.com/6407.html#cutid1). Most of it is Duncan/Methos slash, but there are a few other things, and there's a link to the Methos Boxer Brigade archive at the bottom too. I'm not sure I'd still rec everything I've got up there now, but I remember most of the standalones being good, and Rhiannon Shaw, Sleeps with Coyotes and Killashandra are all excellent writers who I still read.

You had me at "sixteenth century adventurer". Think I'll have to go looking for those.

Date: 2007-07-18 01:05 am (UTC)Blush. I thought it might be, but I wasn't sure, and I'll swear he looked less Duncanish this afternoon than he does now. I remember that episode... it was a cute/silly bit. Don't remember its title, now.
I was the one who abandoned the X-Files, so I guess that makes me one of those cruel deserters.
Hee! I think you probably bailed before I did, and you were wise.
desperately overcomplicating itself to disguise a lack of direction
Fair assessment. I made excuses for a long time, but things got worse, not better.
I'm very excited about Heroes finally coming to the BBC this week - at last I get to see what the fuss is about.
Oh, I hope you like it! I enjoyed it throughly. It doesn't quite have the place in my heart as my primary fandoms, but I watched each episode with intense fascination and it just got better and better. Some bits felt like filler, and there were a a few disappointments (like, not enough of Christopher Eccleston!), but it just got better and better. There's some magnificent writing and characterization. I wonder what it will be like next season.
the latest, The Source, is apparently worse
Oh dear!
It's a shame they didn't do a spin off with Methos instead of Amanda.
I think the real problem is that they did a spin off with Amanda, and made it a bad show. Not worth watching. If they did that with Methos, I'd have been most upset. On the other hand, if they'd done a good, well-written, moody, suspenseful show that did Methos right - it's be the stuff fans dream of.
The Horseman episodes are, in my opinion, among the best. "Comes a Horseman" and "Revelation 6:8". On the other hand, I didn't like Cassandra - but that really didn't matter. I liked Methos being sexy with her, in an ambiguous way with Kronos.
If I recall correctly, "Sleeps with Coyotes " wrote some stories I loved in Smallville fandom. Thanks for reminding me of her, and thanks for mentioning your recs. I'll check them out.
You had me at "sixteenth century adventurer".
Eeee! Wonderful! These are my favourite books and always have been. The Lymond series, in order, is:
Well worth looking for, in my opinion.

Date: 2007-07-19 05:52 pm (UTC)Oh hell, yeah! That would have been amazing. It would never have worked out like that though so it's probably good we were spared the disappointment. I don't trust the Highlander TPTB at all, not after Endgame. And the review I saw of The Source was a fan watching and typing and consisted of comments along the lines of: WTF? Oh my God, that makes no sense, and I can't take it anymore. I think they stopped watching entirely at one point and came back to it several weeks later out of morbid curiosity.
I see all these Lymond books are 16th cent Scottish history - even better. We used to get all that at primary school. Mary, Queen of Scots and her father were both born in my hometown and I used to do tours of the palace.

Date: 2007-07-19 06:07 pm (UTC)Yes. I really loved Amanda in Highlander; I thought she was interesting and sexy and amusing. Raven cured me quickly enough - but I still love Amanda as she used to be.
I don't trust the Highlander TPTB at all, not after Endgame.
They seem to have odd views of their own characters, but then, not being a Connor Macleod fan, I always saw the movies as a series of alternate universes and didn't may the same sort of attention to them.
I think the producers of the TV show had a much better idea of what their own story was, and what it was about. It was somewhat inchoate, but the characters were consistent and much of the writing of individual episodes was good.
I see all these Lymond books are 16th cent Scottish history - even better.
Oh, it's delicious stuff. It isn't entirely set in Scotland - the hero is Scottish and Scottish history remains a significant theme throughout the series, but he's cosmopolitan, and travels (during the course of the series) to France, Malta, Turkey, Russia, and other places - giving us a great overview of Europe of the era.
Mary, Queen of Scots and her father were both born in my hometown and I used to do tours of the palace.
Linlithgow? Really? Somewhere online I have a photo of myself munching cake at Linlithgow. Yes, here: http://www3.sympatico.ca/harrytm/linlithgow1.jpg. I'm the one in the middle of the picture with her mouth full.
But forgive me if I'm confusing one castle with another. As I recall, she was born at Linlithgow, lived at Holyrood, and died at Pontefract - is that right?

Date: 2007-07-19 07:31 pm (UTC)Yup, spot on. And wow, actually in the palace too! The windows to the function room behind you are where I used to get changed into costume. When and why were you there? It looks like some kind of occasion. (Sadly I have no Linlithgow Palace icon, so Eilean Donan will have to do.) I have to admit I can never quite remember where Mary got beheaded, but I thought it began with an R.
Oh, apparently we are both wrong - it was Fotheringhay.
Scotty from Star Trek was also apparently born in Linlithgow - I think they are putting a plaque somewhere!
Re HL, I think you pretty much have to see the films as AUs, from both the series and each other. And I am firm in my belief that the second one never happened at all. I think the characters were consistent in the series, but I think they messed up dreadfully with Endgame - not just with what happened to Connor, but also Faith/Kate was incredibly badly handled and the whole premise could have been done much better. It was a huge lost opportunity.

Date: 2007-07-19 08:05 pm (UTC)1990, for the first Dorothy Dunnett fan gathering. It was a wonderful time. I have a brief account (with pictures of it) on the site at:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/harrytm/dd1990.html. (the links don't work because it's an old site and I can't fix it, but the information about the convention is all okay.)
Sadly I have no Linlithgow Palace icon, so Eilean Donan will have to do.
It will do. It's so beautiful. Utterly photogenic. One of the prettiest castles ever.
Fotheringhay
Ooops! Okay, I'll try to remember that. And I just saw the beheading scene in that movie about Elizabeth I, too.
Scotty from Star Trek was also apparently born in Linlithgow - I think they are putting a plaque somewhere!
Really! Cool. I thought he was born in Vancouver. Shows what I know!
I am firm in my belief that the second one never happened at all.
Absolutely not. It does not exist. It is someone's mislaid opium dream.

Date: 2007-07-19 08:18 pm (UTC)I thought he was born in Vancouver.
The actor probably was born in Vancouver, but according to Star Trek canon the character of Scotty was born in whatever-century Linlithgow. So yes, they are going to commemorate a fictional character from the future. Bizarre.

Date: 2007-07-20 02:35 pm (UTC)It must have been....
it is conceivable that I was doing tours when you were there then!
How cool! We might even have seen each other. I was impressed by the manner and costumes of the people giving tours and serving us coffee - very organized, and evocative of 16th century, but not in a tacky way.
Scotty was born in Linlithgow! Okay, I concede, that's kind of interesting... So once again the art of fiction trumpsthe science of act.
