I was the one who abandoned the X-Files, so I guess that makes me one of those cruel deserters.
Hee! I think you probably bailed before I did, and you were wise.
desperately overcomplicating itself to disguise a lack of direction
Fair assessment. I made excuses for a long time, but things got worse, not better.
I'm very excited about Heroes finally coming to the BBC this week - at last I get to see what the fuss is about.
Oh, I hope you like it! I enjoyed it throughly. It doesn't quite have the place in my heart as my primary fandoms, but I watched each episode with intense fascination and it just got better and better. Some bits felt like filler, and there were a a few disappointments (like, not enough of Christopher Eccleston!), but it just got better and better. There's some magnificent writing and characterization. I wonder what it will be like next season.
the latest, The Source, is apparently worse
Oh dear!
It's a shame they didn't do a spin off with Methos instead of Amanda.
I think the real problem is that they did a spin off with Amanda, and made it a bad show. Not worth watching. If they did that with Methos, I'd have been most upset. On the other hand, if they'd done a good, well-written, moody, suspenseful show that did Methos right - it's be the stuff fans dream of.
The Horseman episodes are, in my opinion, among the best. "Comes a Horseman" and "Revelation 6:8". On the other hand, I didn't like Cassandra - but that really didn't matter. I liked Methos being sexy with her, in an ambiguous way with Kronos.
If I recall correctly, "Sleeps with Coyotes " wrote some stories I loved in Smallville fandom. Thanks for reminding me of her, and thanks for mentioning your recs. I'll check them out.
You had me at "sixteenth century adventurer".
Eeee! Wonderful! These are my favourite books and always have been. The Lymond series, in order, is:
Well worth looking for, in my opinion.

I don't trust the Highlander TPTB at all, not after Endgame. And the review I saw of The Source was a fan watching and typing and consisted of comments along the lines of: WTF? Oh my God, that makes no sense, and I can't take it anymore. I think they stopped watching entirely at one point and came back to it several weeks later out of morbid curiosity.
I see all these Lymond books are 16th cent Scottish history - even better. We used to get all that at primary school. Mary, Queen of Scots and her father were both born in my hometown and I used to do tours of the palace.

Date: 2007-07-19 06:07 pm (UTC)Yes. I really loved Amanda in Highlander; I thought she was interesting and sexy and amusing. Raven cured me quickly enough - but I still love Amanda as she used to be.

They seem to have odd views of their own characters, but then, not being a Connor Macleod fan, I always saw the movies as a series of alternate universes and didn't may the same sort of attention to them.
I think the producers of the TV show had a much better idea of what their own story was, and what it was about. It was somewhat inchoate, but the characters were consistent and much of the writing of individual episodes was good.

Oh, it's delicious stuff. It isn't entirely set in Scotland - the hero is Scottish and Scottish history remains a significant theme throughout the series, but he's cosmopolitan, and travels (during the course of the series) to France, Malta, Turkey, Russia, and other places - giving us a great overview of Europe of the era.
Mary, Queen of Scots and her father were both born in my hometown and I used to do tours of the palace.
Linlithgow? Really? Somewhere online I have a photo of myself munching cake at Linlithgow. Yes, here: http://www3.sympatico.ca/harrytm/linlithgow1.jpg. I'm the one in the middle of the picture with her mouth full.
But forgive me if I'm confusing one castle with another. As I recall, she was born at Linlithgow, lived at Holyrood, and died at Pontefract - is that right?

Date: 2007-07-19 07:31 pm (UTC)Yup, spot on. And wow, actually in the palace too! The windows to the function room behind you are where I used to get changed into costume. When and why were you there? It looks like some kind of occasion. (Sadly I have no Linlithgow Palace icon, so Eilean Donan will have to do.) I have to admit I can never quite remember where Mary got beheaded, but I thought it began with an R.
Oh, apparently we are both wrong - it was Fotheringhay.
Scotty from Star Trek was also apparently born in Linlithgow - I think they are putting a plaque somewhere!
Re HL, I think you pretty much have to see the films as AUs, from both the series and each other. And I am firm in my belief that the second one never happened at all. I think the characters were consistent in the series, but I think they messed up dreadfully with Endgame - not just with what happened to Connor, but also Faith/Kate was incredibly badly handled and the whole premise could have been done much better. It was a huge lost opportunity.

Date: 2007-07-19 08:05 pm (UTC)1990, for the first Dorothy Dunnett fan gathering. It was a wonderful time. I have a brief account (with pictures of it) on the site at:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/harrytm/dd1990.html. (the links don't work because it's an old site and I can't fix it, but the information about the convention is all okay.)
Sadly I have no Linlithgow Palace icon, so Eilean Donan will have to do.
It will do. It's so beautiful. Utterly photogenic. One of the prettiest castles ever.
Fotheringhay
Ooops! Okay, I'll try to remember that. And I just saw the beheading scene in that movie about Elizabeth I, too.

Really! Cool. I thought he was born in Vancouver. Shows what I know!
I am firm in my belief that the second one never happened at all.
Absolutely not. It does not exist. It is someone's mislaid opium dream.

The actor probably was born in Vancouver, but according to Star Trek canon the character of Scotty was born in whatever-century Linlithgow. So yes, they are going to commemorate a fictional character from the future. Bizarre.

Date: 2007-07-20 02:35 pm (UTC)It must have been....
it is conceivable that I was doing tours when you were there then!
How cool! We might even have seen each other. I was impressed by the manner and costumes of the people giving tours and serving us coffee - very organized, and evocative of 16th century, but not in a tacky way.
Scotty was born in Linlithgow! Okay, I concede, that's kind of interesting... So once again the art of fiction trumpsthe science of act.
